Using photos or prior sketches, students will work on building strong, dramatic and interesting compositions, using both vibrant and subtle color.  General concepts covered will be: how to choose a subject, the importance of design, color harmony, understanding light source, atmospheric perspective and painting techniques (including use of the painting knife).

Discussed also will be the importance of plein air painting and how to keep your painting looking fresh when working indoors.

Demonstrations, group critiques, and lots of personal attention are included and paintings brought from the home/studio are welcome at critique.

Students may be beginner to advanced  but participants should have a solid knowledge of the medium they will use.  Oil or water based oils are recommended, and pastels and "open" acrylics are welcome.  Acrylics should be used only if the student knows well how to deal with the rapid drying process of this medium and have experience with it..
